We returned from our trip to Los Angeles last week, and I still can’t stop thinking about what an amazing time we had there! I shared in my packing post about how special the trip was for family reasons, but we squeezed in some fun sightseeing also! Visiting Los Angles is always a little bittersweet for us, since we lived there for so long and still really miss our friends and favorite places there.  Also who can argue with SoCal weather? Heaven! We had been so sick of the crazy cold Connecticut winter in the weeks leading up to our trip, so landing in Los Angeles and being able to feel the sun on our faces and really enjoy being outdoors was such a treat.  It ended up being a really amazing week, and today I’m sharing our album from the trip! I’m also sharing some restaurants we ate at, and Activities we found with the kids.

One of the greatest highlights was some quality time with all four of my siblings on my Father’s side of the family.  We hadn’t been all five of us together in 11 years! We had some special pictures taken, and I’ll be sharing special blog post telling my sibling story next week– so stay tuned! I’d be happy to answer any other questions you have as well, so just comment below.  Lastly, don’t forget that I have a whole Los Angeles Travel Guide! Make sure to check out this and my other Travel Guides if you want more tips for this amazing city.

What We Did…

  • Disneyland! This is a must for us when visiting LA, and we highly recommend downloading the Disneyland app and using Fastpass!
  • Abbot Kinney Blvd.  We love shopping and strolling up and down Abbott Kinney in Venice
  • Santa Monica Pier.  Our kids LOVED the pier, and we rode all the rides and even played some fun games! It’s a really great activity for kids three and up.
  • Manhattan Beach strolls.  Manhattan Beach is so family friendly, and the beach there is gorgeous– even in the winter.
  • The Getty Center. Kyle and I love checking out the exhibits at this gorgeous museum.  Visiting it is a trip in itself!
  • Skirball Cultural Center. This is such a great activity for kids! Marlowe and Major loved the arts and crafts room, and The Noah’s Arc exhibit was one of the coolest experiences I have ever seen for kids.  It’s a must!
  • The Cayton Children’s Museum. The kids had a great time at this children’s museum in West LA
  • The Actor’s Gang Theater. Shameless plug! My stepdad’s nonprofit theater company puts on great shows and events, and even has kid friendly ones on occasion

Where We Ate…

  • The Butcher’s Daughter.  This Venice spot is so photogenic and has delicious vegetarian fare!
  • Sunny Blue Omasubi. I have to visit this spot every time I come to LA, it was even a pregnancy craving for me! Omasubi is like a triangular rice sandwich with delicious fillings
  • SugarFish By Nozawa.  This sushi spot is simple and delicious!
  • Salt & Straw. This is the greatest Ice Cream spot! We ate there every day– they even had a vegan option.
  • The Waterfront Café. This cute food and drink spot right on the Venice boardwalk is awesome for people watching and kid friendly
  • La Scala. This is my FAVE chopped salad in the city.  They also have great pasta!
  • La Tostaderia.  A delicious Mexican seafood restaurant in Venice right on abbott Kinney.  Very informal, but still has a good selection of beers on tap, and even Prosecco!
  • Casablanca.  This Mexican restaurant is a local gem, and a really fun family experience!
  • The Lincoln.  I loved this cool bar and lounge in Venice.  We celebrated Kyle’s birthday there!
  • The Other Room.  This wine bar is really chic and fun.  Perfect for a GNO.
  • In n Out.  My favorite burgers of LIIIIFE.  Make sure to get it “Animal Style”!

After such an awesome trip, we decided to make it annual! I hope I can get back to Los Angeles sooner, but we will definitely be coming back next February for some more family time.

A couple of weeks ago, Kyle and I went on a little “couples getaway” to Catalina Island.  It was my first time, and I was so charmed by this quaint island (a 2 hour ferry ride from LA!) that has such a rich history.  We took tons of pics, and made sure to research the best of everything so I could share with you!   I’ve compiled an Insiders Guide which is now on The Tig– one of my favorite blogs ever!  Visit now to see my full guide, and check out some of Meghan’s other awesome Travel Guides!  Read more below for a few of my favorite snaps from the trip.

I love exploring Los Angeles with Marlowe.  I try to schedule some time away from work once a week to do something out of the ordinary with her.  One of my favorite local kids’ activities is visiting the Museum Of Natural History.  It’s awesome– especially for kids who are animal-crazy. ( So many animal exhibits! Beware the gift shop!) During the summers, The Museum Of Natural History opens their Butterfly Pavilion, and the experience is magical for small children.

Marlowe just happens to be the tiniest bit on the young side for this– I think it’s best when the children can run around on their own and follow the butterflies around– but she loves it nonetheless.  It’s really a beautiful thing to watch her take in the butterflies as we wander around the pavilion.  She also has a mild obsession with flowers, so the environment is perfect for her– there are gorgeous bushes of flowers and archways throughout– an amazing family photo opportunity if you plan ahead! I will mention that the pavilion is outdoors (but enclosed) so try to avoid super hot days! If you haven’t been and want to go, make it snappy: the exhibit only runs until September 7th, and you must purchase tickets ahead.  Enjoy!

Loving Local: Underwood Family Farms https://reztt.com/loving-local-underwood-family-farms/#utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=loving-local-underwood-family-farms https://reztt.com/loving-local-underwood-family-farms/#comments Wed, 22 Jul 2015 01:55:00 +0000 https://happilyevaafte.wpenginepowered.com/home/loving-local-underwood-family-farms Picture

Lately, Marlowe has been obsessed with animals.  Her favorites are dogs, cows, kittens, bunnies, and goats…which she also thinks are dogs.  Valedictorian 2032!  She loves reading books about animals, singing songs about animals, and most recently viewing a dvd about a petting zoo that she asks to watch 35,397,421 times a day. Last week, after Marlowe got a bruise on her forehead from trying to jump in to the television to touch the animals on the screen, Marlowe’s genius Mom (that’s ME!) decided it may be high time to bring this sweet urban child to an actual farm.

Luckily for us, there is a truly fantastic farm in the Los Angeles area called Underwood Family Farms.  I would liken this experience to a farm-centric, smaller, and more manageable Disneyland.  Or really what I’m trying to say is kids go bananas for it, their parents end up eating hot dogs for lunch, following it with a regrettable desert, and everyone is zonked on the ride home.  AKA Best Time Ever!  Entry to the farm is $6 on the weekends for adults, with free entry for children 2 and under.  Then, you purchase carnival tickets for the more sought-after experiences, including the petting zoo, hay ride, and train track.  There are also plenty of animals that you can feed with a quarter at the feed machine nearby! Marlowe’s wishes were answered with this petting zoo, let me tell ya.  She started hyperventilating when we got close to the entrance, and then totally played it cool once we were inside.  I may even call it playing hard to get, since I had to physically drag her back towards the animals that she once loved.  I don’t know if it’s an age thing, but she will alternate between running away from the animals and aggressively trying to smother them.  At one point she lay her entire body on top of a very patient and kind sheep who was probably extremely relieved to see us leave the pen.  It was about 100 degrees on the day we visited, so we kept our exploring to a minimum, but I can’t wait to go back and pick our own vegetables as a family! They even have their own little farmer’s market at the entrance where you can purchase local jams, kettle corn, and fresh produce.  Just remember to bring a big bottle of water, as well as sunscreen and a hat for baby!  The gallery of our family visit is below:

Loving Local: Red Window Coffee https://reztt.com/loving-local-red-window-coffee/#utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=loving-local-red-window-coffee https://reztt.com/loving-local-red-window-coffee/#respond Thu, 02 Jul 2015 01:55:00 +0000 https://happilyevaafte.wpenginepowered.com/home/loving-local-red-window-coffee Picture

I have a major soft spot for “the local spot”, if you know what I mean.  The non-chain, Mom & Pop (or oftentimes Hipster & Life Partner) establishments that make a city what it is.  They’re disappearing, and so I want to highlight my favorite storefronts that keep me Loving Local.  First up, the cutest (and tiniest!) one of them all: Red Window Coffee.

This place popped up in my hood about six months ago, and when they were building it we all thought it was going to be a valet stand.  That’s how tiny it is.  But thankfully it turned out to be a delicious and homegrown coffee stand worthy of a trek.  I also love the decor:  everything looks like it’s been made from packing crates, including the cute little tables where patrons sit and read the paper.  Is “Cozy Industrial” a design term? It’s that.  The coffee is stellar, they have really great pastries, and even cold-pressed Clover juice! Overall, though, when I go here I feel like I’m contributing to something cool.  And there’s no harm in that.

Girls’ Day: Santa Anita Racetrack https://reztt.com/girls-day-santa-anita-racetrack/#utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=girls-day-santa-anita-racetrack https://reztt.com/girls-day-santa-anita-racetrack/#comments Wed, 17 Jun 2015 01:55:00 +0000 https://happilyevaafte.wpenginepowered.com/home/girls-day-santa-anita-racetrack Picture

I recently was on an airplane alone with my nine month old baby, on hour eighteen of what was supposed to be a six hour travel day, and I thought to myself suddenly and vehemently: I NEED TO PLAN A GIRLS’ DAY! (I was also maybe crying and covered in baby food and unidentifiable liquids). So after recovering from said “vacation” and checking myself out of the asylum (I kid, I kid), plan a Girls Day was exactly what I did.  I wanted to do something out of the ordinary– on a weekend and during the day time– and when somebody suggested Santa Anita Park everything clicked.  Getting dolled up and sipping champagne at the Race Track?! Yes please.  Two dollar bets? Right in our wheelhouse.  Santa Anita Park has been open since 1934 at the foot of the San Gabriel Mountains.  Picturesque is an understatement, and the vintage flavor can definitely still be felt.  The best part is that there is truly something for everyone, with suites, seats, restaurants, bars, and bets in every price range.  I even saw LOTS of kids there having the best day of their lives, although thankfully my own spawn was banned for the day.
And when the day came, it could not have a been a more fun or perfect Girls Day, and also managed to cure all of my Mommy angst.  If you become a little snappy, are exhausted and/or find yourself staring in to the fridge trying to remember if this is where you put your cell phone, you may need to plan a day with your ladies. Get your partner/parents/babysitter to lasso your kiddos, and plan something fun AND WEIRD.  You will thank yourself.
Ok back to what’s not weird: The Santa Anita Race Track! First of all, I love my Girls.  Everyone has their own thing going on, is generally overworked and overextended, but when we all get together it’s impossible to stop laughing and almost every single time everyone gets along.  I can’t stress this last part enough.
So we all posted up in a gorgeous suite that had its own betting machine, ordered food, sipped on some cocktails, lay some stupid bets, won some money, lost some money, lost our minds, and had an excuse to get dressed up. We even took a tour from our wonderful Suite Concierge and watched one of the Races from the Winner’s Circle (photo above).  I’m already planning my next trip… with the husband, and maybe even with the baby.  And you guys… I won four dollars! Dinner’s on me.
