The grandparents are pulling out their huge, blowup, bounce house, waterslide so it should be a blast! Sadly it’s too dry so lighting neighborhood fireworks is illegal.
On the historical and patriotic side of things I have a memory I hope to honor. Growing up there was a German American man in my church and the first Sunday in July every year he’d recite the Gettysburg Address. This man was in the German Army during World War 2. He wasn’t involved with the Nazi party in any way but had to fight for Germany. When the war ended he was captured by the soviet army and was held in a Russian prison camp for 6 years. When they were released he returned home to his wife and met his daughter for the first time. They moved to the United States and he supported his family as a brick layer, a skill he learned while in the prison camp. They worked hard, became American citizens, and lived a good life. I didn’t understand the significance of his story as a child but as an adult I see what a truly remarkable person he was. I hope to always remember his appreciation for our freedoms and do my best not to take it for granted.
